Weekend Fun

You know it’s time to clean the bedroom when I can’t stop sneezing all night. Can you guess what we did today? Can this blog get any more exciting? Vacuuming! Dusting! Cleaning baseboards! Why am I not a reality show star?

Mike mowed and cleaned up the backyard a little. He came in and asked what was wrong with my squash plants, but I was confused. Then I went out and saw they were both totally dead. They were fine on Thursday–huge, lush, fruitful. Today they were totally dead. Not even watering could possibly save them. Mike thinks someone poured something bad on them, but I can’t imagine who would do that or what they would have poured on them. I suspect they were traumatized by the thunderstorms yesterday, though that doesn’t make much sense either. I don’t know, but we won’t have any more fresh squash. I think next year I am going to focus my efforts on more tomato plants. We had two, but one died an early death. One tomato plant is nice, but it doesn’t produce enough tomatoes to keep me satisfied.

Today was Sunday, which means I kept thinking about calling my grandma. Every hour or so I would think it had been too long since I talked to her and I better give her a call, only to suddenly remember that I will never be calling her again. As much as she drove me crazy, her passing has left an empty hole in my heart. If we talked today I would have surely drove her crazy as well, since I would have insisted on telling her that Mike did most of the dusting today as well as the grocery shopping. She never could stand to hear about him doing normal, 21st century family duties.

Summer is almost over. I really should take Erik to the Splash Park at least once this year. But if I take him he’ll just want to go every single day. If my damned eyes weren’t so sensitive we could go occasionally, but the way the chlorine spews up into the air just about immobilizes me after about 10 minutes.

Oh! I wanted to post progress on our bilingual child raising experiment. I know there hasn’t been an update on that front in. . . oh. . . years. . . but finally something has happened. Mike has been faithfully speaking only Swedish to Erik since the day he was born but until this week Erik acted like he didn’t notice. He could say things in Swedish, but simply wasn’t interested. All of a sudden he has decided “svenska” is cool and he wants to be just like his Papa, so there’s been a lot of Swedish coming out of his mouth. He understand just about everything and is experimenting with simple things like counting, colors, body parts and so forth. He is also doing a lot of subbing Swedish words into English sentences. When I picked him up from the gym childcare today one of the providers asked if she speaks another language. I was so proud of him! It’s kind of funny since this gal has known him since he was 10 months old and she’s never heard him try to speak Swedish. I would really love to take him over to Sweden for some language immersion, but I don’t want to go over there in the winter and it looks like next spring/summer isn’t going to be a great time for us either so I’m not sure when we’ll get back over there.

On another gym note, I am scouring the internet for a pair of wide width dance sneakers. You’d think the power of the internet would turn up ONE pair of shoes suitable for Zumba/Latin Cardio, but so far my strongest lead is a pair that some people with wide feet say they can squeeze into. However, they also complain that it is a tight fit. Considering I can’t squeeze my feet into most wide shoes I doubt this shoe will work for me. So who can recommend a great dance sneaker for a woman who wears size 11.5WW? I don’t care if they are a men’s or women’s shoe. Seems most of these dance shoes are uni-sex and go up to size 14. If only they would take my Fred Flinstone feet into account I might be able to enjoy my dance classes a little more.

Awesome! I’m so envious of your bilingual child. I’ve always wondered though. Does Mike speak Swedish only when addressing Erik? So does Erik hear Mike and you converse in English? The whole concept intrigues me and I’m so pleased it’s working!
