Lynchburg, VA?
Time to ask the internets for advice.
Assuming Mike can get a week off in August *cross fingers and toes*, we’d like to do a road trip someplace within six hours of here. Our main goal would be relaxation. We wouldn’t want a single thing that would cause us stress. We would also want a variety of children’s activities since we’ll have Erik with us and taking him to adult places is just one big, giant ball of stress.
Blue Ridge Parkway has been suggested, and after looking it up I think the general idea fits the bill perfectly. We just need to find a town nearby that we can stay for a few days.
After researching it, I think Lynchburg, VA is our best bet. It has a really cool Children’s Museum, a nature center, lots of parks and lots of natural beauty. It is only about 4 hours from here and very near to lots of beautiful places that we’ve never seen before. Plus, the hotels are a lot cheaper on the interior than the coast.
But will it be too damned hot to enjoy any outdoor activities in middle of August?
If you were going to do a relaxing vacation about six hours from DC in August, where would you go? I was also sort of thinking Atlanta or Boston, but those drives would be a lot further and Atlanta would probably be even more miserable in the heat.
Ideas needed! Just keep the 3 year old in mind.

Roanoke has a great Children’s Science Museum and the Mill Mountain Zoo is small and fun.
If you’re driving, you might to take Skyline Drive (which is a few minutes from us). I’ve been told it’s beautiful.
As for weather, it’s hella hot and humid in Virginia in August. Miserable. But you can do things in the morning and relax at a pool during the hot, hot hours.

I lived in Lynchburg for 14 years before moving to Ohio a few years back. It’s ironic that we used to take trips to DC to get out of town! Lynchburg is a beautiful little town but I have to put the emphasis on little. Other than the Blue Ridge Parkway and the Peaks of Otter there’s not much there. Even those are both about 30-45 minutes away. I don’t know what your interests are but there is the museum of the original Walton Family in Schuyler, VA. It’s about an hour north of Lynchburg.
I hope that helps a little, feel free to send me an e-mail if you have any other questions about it.

I would forget Atlanta. I used to live there, my best and oldest friend still does, and August was hell. I refuse to go there in the summer. I suppose it’s not *that* much worse than DC in August, but at least DC is close by – I refuse to travel to be hot and sticky.
