Over and Done

I’m sure you are all dying to hear about our terrible day with a poopy preschooler and hours upon hours of signing papers. Blessedly, you don’t get to hear about that. Everything went great!

Erik was still sick this morning, so we cancelled the babysitter and took him with us. We had great fear in our hearts, but there was a bathroom next to the settlement room and he made it there every time. They had a big playroom and he entertained himself quite well for a while, but in the end he just laid listlessly on Mike’s lap. His angelic behavior was a sure sign of real sickness, but at least it didn’t interfere with the closing.

The previous owners are the sweetest people ever. They left us flowers and a very sweet note. They also left brochures for all appliances, diagrams to show how things work, signs to show where things are, and toilet paper in every bathroom. They noticed that one of the windows had issues with the locks so they replaced that window even though it was not in the contract. Awesome, awesome people.

I don’t know how closings are usually conducted, but ours was in a mansion-turned-office with yummy refreshments and friendly people. The realtors and mortgage guy were totally giddy. They were exchanging contact info and facebook names. I’m guessing a big ol’ paycheck makes everyone happy.

The closing only lasted an hour and twenty minutes so it wasn’t nearly as bad as we had been told by various people. I think we were lucky that the settlement glitch was no babysitter. It would have been much worse if it was no money or no contract or something. Our realtor says he’s gone on a couple of walkthroughs where the sellers hadn’t moved out yet. I can’t even imagine.

I clicked over to www.servicemagic.com and put in information for an interior painting estimate. About 30 seconds after I hit “send” I got the first phone call. I now have three appointments set up for estimates. We need to get our colors picked out this weekend! We are moving in Feb. 20. That’s three weeks from now. Holy shit! We better get packing!

On that note, I’m going to sign off for the evening. It seemed like today was going to be such a big climax, but really we have several more weeks of stress to live through. This was just paper shuffling. The real work starts tomorrow.

That’s fantastic! Mazel Tov! We bought our first home 5 years ago, and inspite of the many surprises, glitches, and and confirmation that yes, pools really do EAT money…..we love having our own place.
