Big News!
I thought the sellers of our townhouse were not going to get back to us today even though we knew they needed to sell. Our realtor called around 5:30 with a counter-offer. We gave a counter-counter-offer, they gave a counter-counter-counter offer and suddenly we are closing on Jan. 30 for about $5000 more than we really wanted to pay. We are almost homeowners! If the inspections go well, of course. But they should be ok and OMG we are moving in a month!
Anyone have any moving boxes? I better start grabbing them as I see them come up on freecycle. We can get the Christmas decorations and books packed at the very least.
I want to share pictures with you all, but all I have is a very crappy outside pic that won’t thrill you. As soon as we are able to get over there I will take pics a-plenty and share them. As a few of you surmised, I don’t really want to post to the realty page but if you shoot me an e-mail at carrieATmosaicminds.net I’ll shoot you the link (unless I know you live local, then you’ll just have to wait till we really have the signed contracts in hand–sorry!).
This is an end unit townhome with a side entrance so it feels a little more private. It has a nice deck and a largish backyard that backs to trees. The basement is a walk-out, which is ideal since it means more light. There’s even a storage shed for our lawnmower! The lawn is large enough that a lawnmower will be necessary. Most of the places we’ve looked at required someone with ten minutes and a pair of sharp scissors for grass clipping.
It is a very well maintained house with chair railings, wainscoting, built in storage shelves and a brand new AC/heating unit. We’re really lucky to get such a nice place for the money, even though it is smaller than I would wish. We thought about looking down in Gaithersburg for a place, but when we did a drive through of the affordable neighborhoods I realized that environment really is important to me. There’s a reason our apartment finder guy pointed us to Germantown three years ago. It really does fit our lifestyle and needs and I would hate to give up the small town feel and all the greenery. I hated living in the ghetto in Alexandria and have no desire to go back to that even if it meant five extra square feet in the basement.
Will we finally get Erik into his own room? Where will I put all my sewing crap? Where will we put all our books? We need to get new furniture! Is there a place that sells small furniture so it doesn’t eat up all our room?
My head is going to explode from stress and awesomeness. What a time to decide to quit eating sugar.
In other news, I talked to my grandma today and she’s as crazy as ever. She actually gave me a compliment that sounded sincere, so you know there’s something wrong! She said I’m the smartest person in the family. True, of course, but not something she usually notices since I don’t have a penis. She saw the Shutterfly photo book that I got my mom, which prompted this outpouring of goodwill. If they only knew how easy those books are to make I’d lose all my magic smart cred.
For those of you following along on the court saga with my sister’s husband defrauding my grandma and the credit card companies for upwards of $50K (possibly more), the trial is set for Jan. 7. I’m not supposed to tell my mom about it, but she already told me about it last week. Silly, silly grandma. She also wants to keep it a secret from my sister, but it’s kind of hard to keep that sort of secret from a wife. She’s not going to notice that her husband is on trial? Hardly. I wouldn’t be surprised if she’s called to testify, except I’m not sure how the fifth amendment would apply. I know my grandma and my uncle have both been subpoenaed.
It’s going to be very stressful for grandma, but I think she’ll get through it ok. I was trying to be supportive and reassuring, but I “just don’t understand what it’s like to have a Texas accent.” Ummmmm. . . yeah, Granny, that’s right. But she doesn’t have a Texas accent! She hasn’t lived there in over fifty years. She has a very slight twang but she’s sure that her whole life has been ruined because of her Texas accent and her short stature. If she’d only been an inch taller she could have been a movie star or a secretary. Go ahead and digest that one, if you please.
Anyway, I hope the trial goes well and justice is served. That piece of shit needs to exit our family’s life forever, but he’s the father of three small children which makes everything more complicated. I’m just glad I am way over here on the east coast and don’t have to have many dealings with the whole crazy bunch.
On a completely different note, I did BodyPump yesterday and my shoulder is completely pain free today! I hadn’t been in two weeks thanks to Erik’s illness and Christmas break. This was only the second time I’ve been since the big fall and I was worried. The funny thing is, the last time I went my shoulder also felt a lot better. It doesn’t make much sense, but I guess my body is mysterious. Zumba tomorrow should be a lot of fun if I can move both arms!

Congratualtions on the house! First house can be so exciting. and the side door and privacy are worth it. heck I paid extra for one apartment since it had a window over the sink since it was an end unit.
I dont envy your packing though. I never want to move again.

Congratulations on the house front!
Shame about the fraud and the trial :( I don’t know how this could work out for the best but I hope it does some way.
Happy New Year to You and Yours x

How wonderful! I was driving through the DC area yesterday looking at the townhouse communities and thought about you all…
