Merry Christmas!
It’s been a fun day around here. For years I found Christmas to be the most depressing day of the year, but you can’t be depressed when you have a preschooler in the house. Preschoolers are the very epitome of Christmas Joy.

If you want to overload on holiday cuteness you can find a few more pics HERE.
I think Erik had a pretty good day. We opened gifts at 3 pm because he was so antsy. It felt strange, but it was also a relief. What’s the point of saying “no no no no no no no” all day when you really just want to say “yes?” Tradition? I don’t give two figs about tradition. It worked out nicely because he got to have a really fun afternoon of enjoying his gifts. I’m not sure what he liked best because he was having a lot of fun with everything. It turned out that most of the gifts were play pretend types of things like a pirate set, doctors set and superman cape. He also got some books, a game, and roller skates! I thought they would be pretty safe since we have carpeting in the house. He only fell when he made it to the linoleum. He told me he needs to take lessons. He watches too much Ruby and Max, methinks.
The fabric bags worked like a charm, though there was not the same satisfaction of ripping off the paper. I think we’ll be able to live with that. I didn’t get many made this year, but my next project is going to be making bags out of the rest of my fabric. They are super easy so maybe I’ll even post a tutorial on my quilting blog. I was worried we’d have to cut the ribbons, but they untied very easily. I tried tying them all with bows but most of my bows were really lopsided and I wasn’t sure how easily they would come undone. Score for finally doing something to make my life easier!
We are having company over for Christmas lunch tomorrow so I’ve been working my butt off all day. I tried making a peppermint fudge cake but the peppermint mousse for the filling was a complete fail. I was supposed to make ganache to cover it, but didn’t remember until 10 pm. Since the ganache is supposed to cool for at least 45 minutes before going on the cake I’ll just have to do it tomorrow. I need some beauty sleep!
I hope tomorrow goes off without a hitch. I am not doing my least favorite task–mashed potatoes. I had some Bob Evans mashed potatoes a few weeks ago and they are waaaaaaay better than my mashed potatoes so I cheated and bought those. Shhhhhh! Don’t tell. Everyone should be very happy they don’t have to deal with my lumpy disaster potatoes.
I have to be up bright and early to get the bird in the oven. In years past I’ve just made drumsticks so I wasn’t thinking when I planned such an early Christmas meal! I have to get up well before the ass-crack of dawn to get it started. The sucker is HUGE. Mike is driving our friends to the airport around 2 pm, so that was the main reason for the early meal.
Our main gift to each other was given a couple of months ago–the Wii! I was quite pleased to get The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman. I kept meaning to tell Mike I wanted it, but then I kept forgetting. The man does have psychic abilities once in a while. He also got me The Astonishing Life of Octavian Nothing; Traitor to the Nation; Volume I: The Pox Party by M. T. Anderson. What a title! I’ve never heard of it, but it’s plastered with gold and silver medals so it should be good unless it’s depressing. Why are depressing books always so lauded? I want happy!
It’s time for this Santa Claus to get to bed! We got him two huge sets of Duplos and my dream was to have them built into something super cool to shock him when he came out in the morning. Do you have any idea how boring it is to put together Duplo blocks when you are not a kid interested in engineering and building? I was never that into Legos. In the end we just did one set and left the other set in the box. It will have to be good enough for the boy. I don’t have the energy to stay up all night building. I don’t think Mike does either. He just spent an hour cleaning the kitchen and now is de-stressing with the Wii. De-stressing might be taking it a bit far, though. He is cursing up a storm and jumping all over the place. Our downstairs neighbor must love us.
I hope you and yours all had a wonderful day!
