Wasted Money

Forgive me if you’ve already read this post. I just noticed it in my draft folder and I don’t think I ever published it. It’s from a few days ago, not exactly sure when.

No post from me last night. I was totally engrossed in the girl who stopped swimming by Joshilyn Jackson. I loved her previous two offerings and I guess I must have loved this one since I couldn’t put it down. The other two books were filled with humor even when they were dealing with depressing topics. This one? Not so much. I don’t think I’ve ever voluntarily read such a depressing book. Tora, I’m sorry I gave you this book for your birthday! I should have pre-read it instead of assuming it would be awesome. I guess it was sort of awesome since I couldn’t put it down, but it is still not something I would foist upon someone as a gift. Here you go! Be depressed for a few hours! Happy birthday!

But back to the subject line. Wasted money. I think I’ve mentioned before that I would like some casual t-shirt like things to wear this autumn. I have some really nice autumn clothes, but they just don’t scream “playground.” They scream “out to dinner” or possibly “teacher.” Definitely not “let’s push around this tricycle when Erik forgets to pedal*.”

I vaguely remembered that Old Navy has a plus-sized online store, which is stupid. I guess they don’t want fatties in their precious stores? We can only order online? I try never to order things online, but I was desperate. My only experience with Old Navy clothing has been Erik’s hand-me-downs and they are all fine.

Off I went to their site. When I saw they have flat rate shipping and free returns I decided to buy one of everything with the intent of sending back everything I didn’t like.

That flat rate shipping was a waste of money. Six tops. Six ugly ass, cheap fabrics that you can see through. Six unflattering, weirdly shaped arms. Six pieces of FUG.

They’re all going back.

And I guess I’m going back to the drawing board. Is it really so hard to find a well constructed, non-see through, flattering polo toppish thing? I bought such a thing at Lane Bryant a couple of years ago, then they both went to Oregon with me and they both ended up with bleach stains. I have no idea how my mother manages it, but she can always get a bleach stain on my favorite clothing. And they certainly weren’t white! Now, before you go asking why on earth I expect my mother to do my laundry, I DON’T! I try to hide my dirty laundry, but she’s an overachiever in the laundry department. She’ll suss out every stray sock, every possibly dirty shirt, every clean pair of pants with a cell phone in the pocket and throw them all in the washer without checking pockets, all while dribbling bleach over everything. And that favorite outfit you just bought for your baby? You’ll never see it again. It’s the curse.

At least my gym membership is finally paying off. Not that it wasn’t before. Even though I am not where I want to be in the looks department, that hour and a half a day of daycare is worth every penny. But it is paying off in a more tangible way. A couple of years ago they started a points reward program. You get mega-points for recruiting new members, plus you get points for buying this, your birthday, and coming to the gym. After 2 years of getting five points per visit I finally had enough points to redeem a new hand blender! Mine broke a few weeks ago and I’ve really missed it, so I redeemed the points I never thought I would have a use for and now just have to wait and see if it is a hand blender that works or some kind of tricky thing for stupid people who redeem reward points. I would have redeemed them sooner, but all the earlier prized were work out clothing that didn’t come in fat people sizes. Everyone wants fat people to lose weight, but no one wants fat people in work out clothes. Is that irony or stupidity?

I’ve been watching more Project Runway Australia and it makes me happy. They show actual stuff happening in the workroom, not just dramatic confessionals! They don’t give the designers much time, but it seems like they give them more needed materials. Their work is WAAAAAAAAAY better than the season 5 PR designers. Every single one of the current US designers would have probably been aufed in the second challenge. I can even watch it while quilting since I’m just watching on YouTube. My computer doesn’t like bittorrenting very much.

I guess I better get off this computer and get in the shower. I have a ton of stuff to do today and very little will to do it.
*He finally figured out how to pedal! And he loves it! Except when he forgets.

I am so done with Old Navy too….fine for kids stuff, but for me it’s exactly like you said…ill fitting, see-through fug. Blech. I’ve had my best luck (for casual tops) with Lands End stuff (you can get it at Sears). Sometimes you can catch it on sale. I have a 3/4 length sleeve polo from them that I wear every weekend. I’ve had good luck at Eddie Bauer too and I appreciate that they don’t segregate the larger sizes (I have an outlet near me so it’s cheap too).

Yeah, ON stuff is hit or miss. What about Target? And if you have the patience, try thrift stores.
