Home!

We’re home! I kissed the ground the minute I walked in my non-dog-hairy abode. Ok, so I didn’t, more because I don’t like to get down on the floor than because it would have been dirty. Mike is the best husband in the history of husband’s. I love coming home to an immaculate home. I’m just glad he loves me more than he loves a neat house or he would move back to Sweden.

Our trip was fabulous. We had minimal delays, which helped with our really tight connection. We were only in the San Francisco airport about 25 minutes, then we were off again! We ended up sitting next to a really wonderful girl who just graduated with a masters in early childhood special education and psychology. She’d headed to Korea to teach at an international school tomorrow. Talk about the ideal seat mate when travelling with a young child! I really scored there. She entertained Erik for most of the flight, but at one point there was a toddler having a melt down so she went over and walked him for about 20 minutes. She needed a cape. Don’t all super heroes wear capes? Or maybe she just needed duct tape bracelets like Wonder Woman.

She was not feeling the teaching love and was thrilled when I told her that I hated teaching. She feels like she made a big mistake going into the profession and is really frustrated by all the adults in her life that don’t understand what she’s talking about. I knew exactly what she meant and was able to give her an understanding ear. It was such a pleasure to meet her. I know I’ll never see her again, but she was a major bright spot in my day and I know she’ll go far in life.

Look for more debriefing tomorrow. Lucky you, you get to play the role of my therapist. I don’t know how any one can be with my family for two weeks and not require several therapy sessions afterwards, but I don’t have a therapist.

And now Erik is grabbing at my leg, begging to go back to grandma’s house. I guess he is too young to know he needs therapy after visiting that mess.

Welcome home!! Honestly, I have certain family members that if I were to spend 2 weeks with, I’d either be in jail for murder or in an asylum. You’ve done really well!!

My daughter will be starting her sophomore year in college for early childhood education. She was born knowing that she wants to be a teacher and has worked in schools and daycares since she was in middle school. She’s having a tough time with the attitude of many of her friends regarding her career choice. She’s going to a great school in Boston and many of them have commented about the amount of money she’s spending on an education to be “just a teacher”. In fact, she came home the other night after being with some friends she hadn’t seen all summer. She was hurt because one of the guys asked her what her gpa was and when she reluctantly told him 3.9 (because she’s very humble) he said ‘well, aren’t all your classes really easy because you’re just going to be a teacher?’ We’ve had many discussions about this and I think every time she encounters this attitude, it fuels her determination.
