Torture

Today has been one of those days. I find myself in dire need of a sensory deprivation tank, chocolate, and some kind of hard liquor.

The boy is not happy. He had nightmares all night long, resulting in a cranky, screaming day. All day it’s been the same. He wants something. I say no. He lays on the floor and screams for at least an hour. I’m sure it’s not fair to compare it to real torture. I know there are people in the world who would trade places with me in a heart beat, and I really don’t want to find out exactly why listening to a screaming toddler is better than having bamboo shoots shoved up my fingernails, but still. Torture. Did anyone watch BSG on Friday? You know the sound the hybrid was making? Imagine listening to that all day.

I have been trying to gather fabrics for my new nephew, but am stymied time and again. I finally thought I found the perfect complimentary fabric, ordered it and squealed with glee when it arrived. I opened up the package and found purple fabric staring me in the face. It was supposed to be blue. There is no way I can convince myself it will be ok. Purple and red are for old ladies, not newborns. I want just the right shade of royal blue, but no one local carries it and I’m done trying my luck with internet shopping. What am I going to do?

I took Erik to the quilt store with me this afternoon in one last desperate attempt to find SOMETHING suitable. He, of course, had to poop. There was no changing table. I had to take him out to the car and stand in the rain while changing the stink bomb. It was not just a little rain. It has been POURING here all day, so my back was completely soaked by the time I was through. And there was no royal blue fabric. And Erik screamed mightily as soon as we arrived home and the car ride was over. I explained gas prices to him, but he wasn’t interested.

There was one bright spot in the day! I was the only one in the Dear Jane LJ community to finish two blocks in April, so I won the prize package! My prize arrived today! Thanks Sonnet_of_the_moon! The fabrics are gorgeous, esp the bonus turquoise swirls. She also included three note cards that she decorated with the fabrics. I can’t wait to use them!

Then. . .

More crap.

I’m making Asian beef for dinner, a meal I don’t usually enjoy but that Mike loves. I went to chop the bell peppers. They were gone. Mike looked suitably sorry. I went to chop the green onions. They were gone. Mike did not look suitably sorry. So instead of a veggie fest, we’re having beef with pineapple and almonds. I have no idea how this is going to turn out.

Can I go take a hot bath now? I envy those negligent mothers from the 60’s who could sit around watching their soaps while they sent their kids to their rooms and didn’t know they were supposed to care about their development in the way mothers of today are warned we must care. And yes, I realize that is probably not at all in line with reality, but I can dream today.

oh man do I feel for you. All I have to go by is a one-year-old screaming, but I can only imagine what added years, greater endurance and larger lungs does to the experience. Ugh. Danged nightmares. Poor kid.

I hope Erik gets a nightmare free night tonight and ya’ll have a much better day tomorrow. I hate it when you need a certain fabric and just CANNOT find what you want.

I know zippo about quilting, but I have found that the fabric store in our town that carries a lot of fabrics for curtains and slip covers and other home-ish stuff has a lot of colors. It might be too heavy duty for you?

Sometimes when I see one of those “Appreciate every precious second because they grow up so fast” messages, I want to kick someone, if that helps.
