Unexpected Good Fortune

Erik was begging for his little Irish buddy today, so I sucked it up and called. Can you believe I’ve called the Irish folk several times in the past month? Me either! My phone phobia has been overcome by my desire to see friends who don’t check their e-mail. Today was Irish Mama’s birthday, so I expected her to be too busy to see us. Wrong! She was busy cooking a fantastic roast chicken dinner and invited us all to come partake of it.

Oh.

My.

God.

I have never, ever, ever had such good gravy and roasted potatoes in my life.

Her birthday, she cooked. I felt guilty! We did take over a bottle of wine and they are very social people so seem to really enjoy having down the street friends that can drop over on short notice. Our boys are such a riot together that it would be almost cruel to NOT go over at any opportunity.

Mike’s train was a half hour late, so instead of coming home and cleaning up we had to go straight from the park to the train station to the store to the dinner. We’d been at the sand pit park, so Erik was a total wreck. I sprayed him down with sunscreen prior to throwing him in the pit. It was like coating a pan with grease, then rubbing sugar all up the sides. It was especially maddening adorable when the child decided he was angry and flung himself into the sand face first. I think we could work some sort of Halloween costume out of the experience.

I felt all sorts of old fashioned at the park. I packed up a little sewing kit and worked on hand applique while Erik rolled in the dirt. That’s the only park I would dare try something so attention intensive since that’s the only park Erik doesn’t run around in. He can (and did) sit in the sand for over an hour. Too bad the nasty gypsy moth caterpillars are starting to make an appearance. In a few days (possibly weeks) the ground will be crawling with them and it’s so gross that we have to skip that park until they go away.

You know what? It is well past my bed time and I am tired. I should quit regaling you with boring tales of sand pit monsters and go brush my teeth. I went to Body Pump today and just about killed myself. I didn’t think I was going to be able to chase Erik to the car after class. When we got home from dinner I had to get Mike’s birthday cake made because it requires an evening in the fridge to become a perfect strawberry and pudding soaked delight. The kitchen was such a disaster that I cleaned it up, but still have at least one more load to go in the dishwasher. Mama needs some sleep!

It’s so nice to have a buddy you can just call and get together with on the spur of the moment!

I envy you your sewing while your child plays! I’ve dreamt of knitting while Fae plays, but it seems I always need to do something… she’s too high and needs help down… she can’t get on the swing… her shoes fell off. UGH! But one of these days, I’m going to fufill that dream… even if it’s for 3.5 seconds!
