Linky-loos and Memes Too!
I don’t have the energy to write a full blown entry tonight, though I could make a very long list of things I hated about my Latin Cardio class today. We had a sub (I hope hope hope he was a sub and not a new teacher) and it was Not Good. The only consolation is that I think the pumped up hunk leading the class must have been gay. If I have to make an ass of myself while shaking my boobies and pouring down sweat, I’d rather do it in front of someone who thinks I’m gross because I don’t have a penis than someone who thinks I’m gross because I’m fat.
I’ve been working most of the day and am starting to feel like a total loser. My job requires me to find audio and video of webcast university lectures, which can be really interesting and enlightening, but can also make me feel like a waste of space. The professors are so smart! And young! And smart! Why didn’t I continue my education instead of joining a profession that I was totally not suited for? What’s the point of being smart if you don’t do anything with your brains? What’s the point of obsessing about it when I have a picture perfect life and I probably never would have met Mike if I hadn’t been so depressed that I retreated into the computer and filled my social void with an internet community? Bah. And I still have to find about 30 more lecture snippets.
Linky-love!
1) Squid, a very articulate and intelligent blogger and mother of a special needs child, has started a really neat writing project. Can I Sit With You? is a collaborative blog designed to “share our schoolyard horror stories not only amongst ourselves, but also with the children who are experiencing this special form of social purgatory right now. We want them to know that even though what they’re going through sucks, they’re not alone.” They are going to collect the stories into book form and sell them off with proceeds going to their local special ed association, though I believe the deadline for getting stories in for the book is just about here.
I’ve just sat and read three pages worth of stories and have to tell you it’s some great writing, if not particularly easy to read. When things slow down here in a few weeks I plan on submitting something. I haven’t written anything of substance since we disbanded Mosaic Minds.
2) Free Rice is the addictive word game you’ve got to play! I know many of you are already playing, but if you aren’t you’re missing out on helping feed the hungry while testing your word skills. My friend Julie has a post up explaining it in further detail (including a mathematical equation to figure out how many grains of rice it takes to fill a bowl), or you could read the FAQ at the site. It’s just a really neat thing.
And a Meme Too!
Tree of Knowledge tagged me for the
Pharyngula Mutating Genre Meme. Try saying that three times fast! It was started by PZ Myers at Pharyngula as a means of demonstrating evolution in cyberspace.
First, the rules:
There are a set of questions below that are all of the form, “The best [subgenre] [medium] in [genre] is…”.Copy the questions, and before answering them, you may modify them in a limited way, carrying out no more than two of these operations:
- You can leave them exactly as is.
- You can delete any one question.
- You can mutate either the genre, medium, or subgenre of any one question.
For instance, you could change “The best time travel novel in SF/Fantasy is…” to “The best time travel novel in Westerns is…”, or “The best time travel movie in SF/Fantasy is…”, or “The best romance novel in SF/Fantasy is…”. - You can add a completely new question of your choice to the end of the list, as long as it is still in the form “The best [subgenre] [medium] in [genre] is…”.
You must have at least one question in your set, or you’ve gone extinct, and you must be able to answer it yourself, or you’re not viable.
Then answer your possibly mutant set of questions. Please do include a link back to the blog you got them from, to simplify tracing the ancestry, and include these instructions.
Finally, pass it along to any number of your fellow bloggers. Remember, though, your success as a Darwinian replicator is going to be measured by the propagation of your variants, which is going to be a function of both the interest your well-honed questions generate and the number of successful attempts at reproducing them.
So, without further ado:

Thanks so much for mentioning Can I Sit With You? We have had so many great submissions, but we are still looking for more. Please send your essay in soon so it has a chance to be published in the hard copy book.
Looking forward to reading more of your words-
