Weird Weekend

Friday night I was sitting on the couch, minding my own business (or minding the business of all the internet strangers who post daily journal entries), when I was suddenly struck smellless by a cold. One minute I was fine, the next my nose was so plugged up I thought I would have to get out the baby nose snot sucky thing and save myself from doom.

I knew I couldn’t sleep in such a condition, so I overdosed on Airborne, then rummaged up a bottle of children’s Benadryl. It was the only cold medication I could find, so I decided it would have to do. It’s probably expired by now. I bought it when Erik was a newborn in case he suddenly went into anaphylactic shock and needed something. I would have bought an epi pen as well, but you have to have a prescription.

I found an adult dosing chart, totally misread it, and prepared myself 4 tablespoons of cold medication. It was almost half the bottle! I was confuddled, but as everyone with a cold knows, when your head is full of snot your brain cells can’t function.

Just as I flung my head back to down the meds, I saw the word teaspoon out of the corner of my eye. I was supposed to take 2-4 TEAspoons, not TABLEspoons. I almost killed myself! Or at least sent myself into some kind of stupor.

When I woke up Saturday I no longer had any nose snot, but my ears and eyes were leaking other types of goop and my face looked like a fancy wedding cake with lots of pearl dots all over it. I love a zitty cold. NOT! But a zitty cold is better than a snotty cold, so I’ll take it.

By 6 pm I was feeling pretty ok, so off Erik and I went to a birthday party for one of Erik’s little friends. Or I should say, the son of one of my friends. I was really happy with Erik because he actually played with the kids and didn’t act scared at all! He found a family he liked and totally hung out with them all evening, ignoring me. I was not sad. The mom looked punk rock with super short spikey hair, a black and white Audrey Hepburn t-shirt and a pregnant belly. She built tower after tower with Erik, his new favorite word and thing to do.

I think I may have done the wrong thing on the present front. I read somewhere that $10 was the appropriate amount of money to spend on a random kid party so I thought I went over budget with a $16 gift. Turns out I was pretty much under budget compared to the other kids. I got a set of four foam puzzles that were for ages 3+. I ignored the age advisory because Erik is all about the puzzles and can do puzzles of that type with very little help. I didn’t think about a kid wanting to stick the foam in his mouth and bite it off. Whoops!

Overall we had a good time. Saw a couple of people from the moms group so got to socialize a little bit, ate cake, let Erik play. What could be better?

My cold is almost all gone, with just a little residual ear goop. I’m been pouring rubbing alcohol down it and that seems to help. It better go far, far away because I have things to do today!

I’m running down south or maybe over west to meet up with Tora and go to an old plantation/quilt show! Should be fun! I’ve only been to one quilt show since taking up quilting so I’m really looking forward to it. Plus, Tora says she has tomatoes and peaches fresh from the farmers market and there’s nothing in the world that can beat farm fresh tomatoes and peaches. Not even chocolate. I can’t believe I just said that, but I think it is true. I’ve been on a fresh fruit/veggie kick the past couple of weeks. I’m not really doing the Sparkpeople thing at all, but I have dramatically increased my intake of fresh greens (and yellows and oranges and reds). I discovered that I love kiwis. Who knew?
