Four Things

1) We have tickets to a Wiggles concert in Baltimore on August 10! Mike and my mom are making fun of me because I’m excited, but I’m only excited because I think Erik is going to have a blast. He loves to get out his Wiggles books and DVDs and things and stare at them. I can just imagine the pure joy and amazement he’ll experience when he realizes what’s going on. When he’s a super-cool teenager with his own blog, do you think he’ll put the Wiggles down on the “first concert” meme question?

2) My mom watches Dancing with the Stars and American Idol. How did these shows become so popular? They’re painful to watch, especially Dancing with the Stars. Clyde the Glide is a tall, black athlete. He should have rhythm. He has none! Billy Ray has none! Several of the others have none! I know I can’t dance, but I think if I had a week to practice I could at least get the steps down.

3) Kisha wanted a dinner report every night since my mom has such a limited range of foods she’ll eat. Monday we had steak and baked potatoes, a success. Tonight she turned her nose up at grilled chicken sandwiches (slab of french bread, chive and onion cream cheese, rotisserie chicken, tomatoes, provolone cheese, put under the broiler till bubbly) and I wasn’t sure if she would even try them, but once she did she loved them.

4) Erik had his 18 month wellness check today. I hate hate hate hate hate going in for wellness checks because I feel like the doctor is judging me the whole time. I’m just glad I live in this time period with access to the Internet and the ability to peek into the lives of other moms and know that there is not any single one way of doing things. I can’t imagine living back in the days when the doctor was all-knowing and mothers were thought to be stupid at best and deliberately harmful at worst. The doctor has been after me to get Erik weaned since his first birthday. I’ve done a lot of reading on toddler nursing and I can’t find any good reason to force him off the breast. Sure, it would be easier for me. Yes, having a big kid sucking on the boob irritates people like my mom. But nutritionally speaking? It’s good for the boy. Erik has only been to the doctor for two sick visits his whole life. I think a lot of that has to do with the breast feeding.

The doctor was happy because the boy has lost a pound. I thought that was a bad thing and was prepared to get a lecture, but she was thrilled that he’s now only in the 25th percentile for weight since he’s still in the 5th percentile for height. He’s ok on all his development except speech. I have to remind her every time that we are a bilingual household so his development will be slower.

I also got really irked when she kept telling me the importance of reading to him. I KNOW the importance of reading to him. We are a family of readers! I used to be an English teacher! How can I read to a kid who grabs the book and takes off running whenever I try to read to him?

Hah! I SO hear you when it comes to the reading! My first two boys loved to be read to; then along came #3. In his first five years, the only time he stayed still long enough to have an entire book read to him was during his first three weeks, when he was in neo-natal intensive care!

He loves books now, though, and I love that I still have someone I can read great kid-lit to.

    It will come. Keep persevering.

Carrie… I’m coming over to your house for dinner.

If that is your mundane…. I’m there! My mundane is cereal.

  3. Emee Says:

Me too. What time is dinner on?

Peanut wouldn’t sit still long enough to read a book at that age either. Now, it’s “You read it me!”

He might be a little slower in early speech development, but Erik’s language skills when he’s older and his ability to pick up 3rd & 4th language will be amazing. And breastfeeding – the pediatrician should know better. Everything I’ve ever read has said do what’s best and most comfortable for you & the kiddo.

    That chicken sandwich sounds yummy!

Yay! The Wiggles! I don’t even have kids and I think they look fun.

LMK is super picky too. He will not eat any cooked vegetable save for green beans and corn. I need variety people, variety! Plus, he makes up his mind before he tries something. He’s like a little kid making a face before the food even gets to the vicinity of his mouth. Such a baby.
