Happy Birthday Mommy!

I’ve become a royal entity. Instead of referring to myself as me or I, I refer to myself as mommy. “Mommy has to poo-poo! Mommy has to cook dinner! Mommy doesn’t want her hair pulled! Mommy loves you!” So happy birthday Mommy!

I really appreciate all the birthday well wishes. I feel loved and tingly inside. I know I have lots of internetty friends but on days like today I get to bask in the glory of all the friendships. You guys rock.

My day was appropriate for a young-old mother’s birthday. Was awoken at 6 by a feverish, sucking baby (we usually get up at 8 or later). Whoo-hoo! Might as well have just went with the Swedish tradition of opening presents in bed, except Mike was already long gone by that hour. Erik was actually a really good boy today despite (or because of) his fever. I think he’s just teething. We couldn’t go to the gym since the daycare doesn’t take sick kids, so we just hung around the house. I ended up taking a long nap in the afternoon which made my mouth feel fuzzy the rest of the day. Yes, it’s my birthday and I can talk about fuzzy mouths if I want to.

We got some yummy Italian take-out so I didn’t have to cook and Mike gave me three totally fabulous presents. He has a tradition of ordering me Juliet Marillier books direct from the UK for my birthdays and he didn’t fail this year. I got the third book in a series, The Well of Shades. I can’t wait to read it! I also got a gift certificate to Jo-anns, which is excellent because I have several quilts that are on the verge of being finished that will need backing and batting. Or I might buy a walking foot for my sewing machine if I can find one. And. . . . . . and. . . . and. . . a new video iPod! I have no idea why I need a video iPod but it’s cool and sleek and black and pretty and did I mention it’s an iPod? Now I just have to figure it out and get some music loaded on it. I’ve been using Mike’s iPod shuffle since I started going to the gym and have never bothered to change the songs. I’m getting very, very tired of those same 150 songs playing over and over and over again.

Since I took a nap in middle of the day I never got around to making the most fabulous brownies ever (recipe provided by Sweet Pickles). Or one would assume they are the most fabulous brownies ever. Sweet_Pickles didn’t actually advertise them as such, but I’m optimistic. Instead, I ran in to Safeway after we picked Mike up from the train station and grabbed a Triple Chocolate Mousse cake. You can’t go wrong with triple chocolate. And mousse. And cake!

Only you can.

You can go terribly, terribly wrong.

Since I was the birthday girl, I grabbed one of the fancy white chocolate fans off the top of the cake and ate it while I was serving the cake. My taste buds immediately revolted as the taste of raspberries overwhelmed my senses.

The guy at Safeway had given me a raspberry chocolate cake.

GAG GAG GAG GAG GAG.

I know I’m in the minority, but I hate raspberry with my chocolate. Hate it hate it hate it. You get the idea.

I was so angry and disappointed that it took every ounce of self-control I own not to take the damned thing and throw it at the wall or in the sink or just smash it up with my fist. In the end I just shoved the knife into it and screamed. I’m oh-so-mature and fancy. Mike was laughing his ass off because I always have birthday cake snafus, though this one certainly. . . takes the cake.

I threw together a little Swedish kladdkaka, which is normally to die for, but this month of no sugar has done a number on my system. Mike says I’m normalized. I don’t know what it is, but I do know I ate one rather small piece and I am sick as a dog. I had Mike throw out the rest, along with the ice cream. I ate it and tried my hardest to pretend I was enjoying it, but it was way too sweet. I think I may have finally trained myself right out of my sweet tooth. I have cravings, but the cravings aren’t even that strong anymore. I can overcome them with the reality of the disappointment I feel every time I eat something sweet. Fruit salad (pineapple, grapes, bananas and walnuts) is really the only sweet thing I enjoy these days. This is such a milestone for me, yet so hard for me to accept. As I said yesterday, I just can’t relate to this person who doesn’t crave sweets. Who is this new me? Why doesn’t she shed 100 pounds?

The other two great things about my birthday: I watched the Battlestar Galatica season 3 finale and it sent shivers up my calves. Loved it! Love love love. This season hasn’t been as great as the first two, but it’s still pretty darned good. Questions are racing through my mind. Who’s a cylon? Who who who?

I also finally watched the Stardust trailer and I got shivers all over. I love shivery movies. I’m a huge fairy tale fan so this movie is right up my alley. I’m not always a Neil Gaiman fan because his imagination is sometimes too large for my narrow world view, but Stardust is one of my top 10 favorite reads probably. At least in the fantasy category. I’m a sucker for a good fairy tale.

Lastly, I got block number 5 from the birthday_block community. I’m supposed to get 16 blocks so it will be interesting to see how many people flake out. At least I have a birthday early in the year so if people flake out I just won’t send them one (is that petty?). It would be sad to have the last birthday and send out blocks to every single person, only to not receive a full load back. Hopefully people are just a little late. I can understand that. Things like this just make me nervous because I’ve been burned before. I usually avoid signing up for things that will lead to disappointment but I thought this was a sure winner. Time will tell, I guess. On the up side, I have received some very beautiful blocks.

Ugh, now I have to envy you and your iPod, too.

Everyone has one but me. (insert whine)

    Happy birthday again!

Ohhh, I’m late, but Happy Birthday!

I’m envious of the iPod too. On the other hand, I’m glad you had a good birthday, sugar disappointments aside. I’m sorry about the raspberry chocolate cake though. I’m in the minority too, I don’t like the raspberry/chocolate combo at all. The raspberry ruins the chocolate for me.

Happy Birthday! Enjoy your iPod! And I hope you get to have the Triple Chocolate Mousse cake soon… that sounds delicious.

Happy birthday a few hours late. You can send the raspberry choco cake to me. I’m that good of a friend – I’ll take it off your hands. ;-)

Fruit salad recipe: cantaloup, strawberries, grapes, kiwi, honeydew, blackberries, etc for the base, wisk together some lime juice, lime zest, honey, ginger and if you want a little kick, some cayenne pepper – pour on fruit & toss – yum – also works as a marinade/basting sauce when you roast sweet potatoes

Sorry to hear about your birthday cake snafu. That just royally sucks!
I’ve been part of a few birthday/secret pal exchanges and I’m always getting burned. Hasn’t stopped me from signing up again…!
