If only I knew how to make coffee

We have a coffee machine, but the one time I tried to make coffee it was a disaster. Plus I have to have about half a cup of milk and sugar and half a cup of coffee. There is no sugar in the house.

How am I supposed to wake up?

I went to a little mom group party last night and didn’t get home till close to midnight! What is this old lady thinking? Then Erik was up and down all night, demanding food. I think he’s going through a growth spurt. He wakes up three or four times a night and sucks both boobies dry, something he hasn’t done since he was a newborn. His diaper gets so full that he has little crystal gel things sticking to him in the morning. Last night one of the moms said that if you put a regular diaper in water it will eventually explode and those little crystals will be everywhere. I am half tempted to try it just to see, but she said it was hell to clean up so I guess I won’t try that.

GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!! I had a whole bunch more written and Erik just walked over, grabbed the mouse, and did something very, very bad! I don’t even know what!

Anyway, a huge thanks to my LJ friends who told me how to make a super-fancy salad. There were two schools of thought: Greek and. . . . Not Greek. Since it was a fondue supper I went with the Not Greek and made a totally delicious salad. Who knew it was so easy? One bag baby spring greens, one bag spinach, a handful of purple grapes, blue cheese, pecans, and dried cranberries. I used a plain balsamic vinegrette and it was excellent! I always want to like raspberry vinegrette, but it’s always too strong for me. All that salad for six people and there was barely any left. I take that as a sign that they really liked it. I’m not used to being a salad bringer. I’m usually the dessert bringer.

I had so much fondue I think I have cheese oozing out my pores. Our hostess lived in Switzerland for a couple of years so knew the authentic Swiss way to make it. I even was able to skip the chocolate fondue without feeling the need to scratch my eyes out. The fruit was plenty sweet and delicious. I need to eat more fruit.

I’ve only had intense sugar cravings on Monday. Since then I’ve been fine and my mood has been a lot steadier. It’s funny how I find it so easy to see the impact sugar makes on a child’s behavior, yet I have this belief that it doesn’t do anything negative to my behavior. WRONG! I’m a lot happier and calmer when I’m off sugar.

And now I better stick a diaper on my naked baby before he pees all over the house (I like to let him air out for a little while, but not usually this long) and go cook breakfast. If I can stay awake.

Carrie, have you ever heard of/tried the South Beach Diet? My husband and I are on our second week of Phase 1, and we actually like it quite a bit. Lots of meat, veggies, cheese, eggs, salad…but no fruit, bread, pasta, rice, potatoes. The idea is that you need to “break” your body of its cravings for sugar/carbs, then slowly add them back into your diet at a level with which you’re comfortable. Even the fruit has tons of sugar in it, which will perpetuate cravings. My mom’s lost 8lbs in 2 weeks (and she’s a definite sugar addict), my dad 4lbs the first few days.

It’s not a severe diet, because you can eat until you’re satisfied…just making sure you’re eating the right things. You can have lots of snacks, etc. We’re actually wondering why we haven’t been eating this way already!

Just a thought…hope you can stay awake today!

Your salad does sound yummy. Think I’ll make it to go with our Sunday supper tomorrow.

I had a student once do an experiment similar to the one you describe with the diaper. You’re right – what a mess!

Good luck with the coffee maker. ;-)
