Pleasant Surprise

If you’re following along with my to-do list, you know today was picture day and I was not happy about it. Also, if you are following along with my to-do list you might be crazy and I want you to come and be my mommy. I need someone to keep in line.

I went in with a bad attitude and a sheaf of coupons for the local mall photo competitors. I was prepared to walk out of Sears the second my clock showed 15 minutes over my appointment time and I was prepared to make a big, loud, hairy deal of it. This motherhood schtick has made me angry and vocal.

I am glad I didn’t have to put on my bitch-face. Instead, I was shocked when I was seen right away and the photographer was truly excellent. She did exactly as I asked (and believe me, I asked) and got a ton of great pictures. The picture above cracks me up because in the full version you see me grabbing Erik’s arm to try to keep him in place. Despite the excellent service and mad photo skillz, we had a major problem: Running Toddler. The boy, he is fast.

The Christmas pictures were pretty good because I saw a little rocking horse and suggested we use that as a prop. It kept him busy and he had a grand time trying to make it go. The birthday pictures were ok as well because I took his favorite toy and there are some great shots of him playing with it. The Halloween pictures sucked majorly. He kept picking up the pumpkin props and throwing them, then he’d run run run out of the little picture room and try to turn off the register computer. I didn’t have time to go to the gym today, but I spent two hours running after Erik so I think it all balances out. My only complaint, actually, is that it takes forever to look through the photos and make an order and there is no way to contain a mobile, curious, pre-disciplined child. They have a huge area by the viewing terminals and behind the main front desk so that is great for older children who don’t run away but Erik runs away. I wish they should fence it off somehow, but I guess it would look kind of tacky.

If you want to see a few of the other pictures you can go to my flickr page to look at them. I also have all the trip pics up there and don’t plan on posting them here. I just don’t have the time or energy to go through all that.

After my little angst session yesterday about not doing things the way the moms in my group like to do things (not that I care to do things their way–I just want to find some friends I can relate to) I got a big giggle today at the mall. I took Erik to the little playground in the middle of the mall (pointless, really, because instead of playing on the fun stuff he runs over to the adults and tries to get random people to pick him up) and suddenly realized the people behind me were talking about Erik. The thought he was a very hip baby in his blue and chocolate striped shirt (the ones in the professional pics). Score! I finally did something socially acceptable! (You should hear how much my mom complains about me not dressing the boy in sports clothes.)

Ok, ok, so I’m being a little bit sarcastic. I think I dress Erik just fine and if anyone disagrees they can go have their own damned baby! Or better yet, they can buy a Cabbage Patch Doll so they don’t traumatize a real kid.

I’m plugging away at my crazy to-do lists and almost have all my computing stuff done. That means I’m going to have to venture out of my electronic fog and venture into the real world. I’m going to have to do things like clean out the car and scrub toilets. Why do they toilets always need to be scrubbed? How do they get so dirty? Seriously, I’ve never had toilets that get moldy as fast as the toilets in this apartment. It’s disgusting. Even more disgusting is a certain toddler’s endless desire to stick his hands in the toilet water. I bought a toilet lid latch but it didn’t work. I guess I need to try a different brand.

And now I better go to sleep. The lullabies are playing and they are starting to make my brain fuzzy.

The pictures are great! I love the rocking horse. I had the same problem with the photos we did of Peter @16 months - he would just walk away. Oh he’d keep grinning … but he was gone so quick! I’m going to do new photos here again before Christmas - I haven’t done a ‘dressy’ one in a long time (or ever? Despite doing so many portraits I never have him seriously dressed up for them). Does Sears have shopping carts? Thats one of my life savers when you are ordering - put him in the shopping cart. Although normally I also have Grandma along to help so she tends to keep an eye on him while I’m picking out photos.

You mentioned somewhere back in a post that he is only 5th percentile for height - he doesn’t seem so little to me. You would laugh if I put Peter next to him - he was 100 percentile for height and weight at a year and when we measured him height and weight at 18 months he came out 34 inches and 34 pounds. People assume he must be older because he’s so big. And now he runs runs runs! I think I lose weight chasing him too. :-)

Glad you had a better experience with portraits this time - I love portrait time so I’m always glad to hear when someone had a positive experience.
