Heaven Help Us All
I stumbled across proof positive that people really are more stupid than I give them credit for. I know I shouldn’t be, but I am actually astounded at the things people do.
I have become a fan of Big Love, the HBO series about polygamy. I wanted to find out when the next season starts, so I found the official website and clicked around. Margene, the youngest wife on the show, has a blog on the site. You and I know it is just a marketing tool to keep people interested and possibly drop a few show hints. Everything’s got to be multi-media these days.
The blog allows comments, though you have to be registered at the Big Love forum to comment (I think). This means the commenters HAVE to know it is not a real blog. It’s not like they’ve set it up on blogspot just hoping to fool people into thinking it is real.
People comment!
They comment for real!
They harangue her for being a polygamist. They go lactivist on her and insist she breastfeed. They get overly excited and use bold, underline and italic to no good purpose. They give her long and thoughtful posts about her entries. They tell her when the other wives are up to no good. Some of them act like they have no clue that Margene is just a character in a television show.
Others make it clear they know she is a TV character, but they still grovel at her feet and tell her how much better she is than the other women. Do they think they are writing to the actress? I’m going to go out on a limb here, but I’m guessing the actress has nothing to do with the blog. A writer for the show probably puts it together.
There is a lesson to be learned here. When people harass me about the way I raise my baby I can take a deep breath and remember that people are such busybodies that they harass fictional characters about their baby raising skills as well. If fictional characters aren’t safe from a virtual tongue-lashing than no one is.

oooh we have just started this programme over here, and I am already hooked. :)
I have been reading Marlene’s blog for a while though, and I can’t believe some of the comments on there. You know it makes me wonder if people dont have real lives..lol How can you not know its a marketing blog..some people are just so gullible..lol

That’s like my cousin’s daughter talking about how she got her first ATM card yesterday (she’s 21) so she could donate money via Paypal to this “organization” to put an ad in the newspaper so they can get one of her soaps back on the air.
Seriously? Good gravy.
And she’s family!!

What do you mean it’s not real? Pshaw. Next you’ll be saying the author who died on the Lost plane crash wasn’t real either… LoL.

Yeah, that’s a little scary. People engage a bit too much in fictional pursuits sometimes, I think.
