Loooooong Days
We made it. Aren’t you glad? I am. I don’t ever want to travel alone with a baby again. People were really kind and made the trip a lot easier, but it still was not something I want to repeat. Did you know you have to put the stroller through the x-ray machine? To do that you have to lift out the baby, somehow manage to hold him while messing with the stroller mechanics. I found the best way to accomplish this feat is asking the old Hispanic man who doesn’t speak a word of English to hold the baby. Yes, I’ve resorted to letting strangers hold the baby.
Really, I shouldn’t have had that problem. Tora was able to go through security with me in Dulles and that was a total lifesaver. I should have been good to go, but apparently the L. A. airport is totally backwards and doesn’t have trams between the terminals. I asked several different people because I just couldn’t believe it, but in the end I had to go out in the cold with the stroller and hoof it down the sidewalk, re-check in, and go through security again. I made it to my gate right when they started boarding.
MisterE was pretty good, though he did have a few lovely little spats. I only had one person be rude about it. I actually had a really nice lady hold Erik for about 20 minutes on the six hour flight. It was a lifesaver. He was just not happy with me at all and needed a change of pace. I have read other mommy blogs where the women get offended and bent out of shape that someone dared suggest they hold the baby, but apparently I am not all that maternal because I thrust him in the arms of anyone who asked.
Today was almost longer than the flight day. The two big dogs are VERY interested in the smell of my breastmilk. They are also very interested in Erik and lick his head whenever they can get near him. It makes nap time hard.
My sister’s two kids have colds and are totally little whiny-poos. I’ve learned what a true whiney baby is and will endeavour to never complain about MisterE again. He has been one happy little camper today. He’s only screamed a couple of times, both while taking a nap. I’d love to be privy to his dreams and see what makes him scream and what makes him laugh out loud in his sleep.
We went over to my grandma’s and she was in love with Erik. Thank goodness. I thought I would have to have a fit if she said a single negative thing about him.
Instead, she directed all her negative energy at my sister and her crying babies. Her little girl is very clingy and needy and has a really sore throat, so my grandma kept yelling at my sister to fix her. How she was supposed to do that is beyond all of us. She gave her tylenol but what else can you do? She’s taking her into the doctor tomorrow.
At one point all three children were screaming, my grandma had the TV on for “noise” as if we needed more of that, and my grandma decided to wind up all her collectible bird music thingees to distract the babies. I thought I would have to cut my ears off. Poor granny. She just doesn’t remember what babies need or like but she really wants to show that she’s good with them and knows everything. She was extremely offended when I wouldn’t let MisterE eat a pudding cup.
I have a lot more I could say, but I am way too tired to think of how to say it. Jet lag here I come. Or maybe I’m already there.
I’m just very thankful that the boy loves attention from strangers. He’s been having the time of his life today with all the attention that’s being lavished on him.

Phew. I was worried that grandma would start in on his hemagioma or something. I’m glad she’s on her best behavior. Have a good time!

I travelled alone with my 2 young boys shortly after 9/11 and they acted out horribly during one of the security checks. Some woman had the nerve to comment “You shouldn’t be allowed to travel without a nanny.”
Anyhow, I’m so happy to hear that you made your trip after the fiasco with the cancelled flight! Good luck on the return journey!

Wow, I can’t believe LAX doesn’t have transportation between terminals! That’s just weird.
