Belly Bump

One of the hardest things to do with a giant belly bump: shave my legs! Honestly, I could care less if I have hairy legs or not, but I can’t stand it when they reach a certain point and scratch me while I’m trying to sleep, so today was shaving day. I thought it would kill me. Can you imagine the 911 call on that? Fat, naked, pregnant lady in need of shaving assistance. Scary.

I have been craving pumpkin pie for days and days, so I finally bought one today. Mistake. Grocery store pies are nasty nasty nasty and a complete waste of money. How is it possible to take something that is supposed to be so good and make it so bad? If making a crust didn’t require so much standing I’d make one for myself right now. I’ve tried various pre-made pie dough and they are all disgusting. I can’t even identify the nasty flavor they are all imbued with, and I don’t understand who would buy such a thing. Maybe I’m just spoiled because my grandma truly is a phenomenal pie maker. The only other pie crust I’ve had that comes even close to matching hers is my own, and she’s the one who taught me to make it. I wonder if I could mix it in the food processor instead of cutting the shortening in with two butter knives. That would eliminate a lot of the standing. As if I really need a pumpkin pie.

Speaking of Granny, she called today to see how I was doing. I tried to be nice, but it’s just so hard. Her words don’t sound totally crazy when I write them down, but her tone of voice. . . oh Lord, her tone of voice. Everything is an EMERGENCY! And URGENT! And HORRIBLE! Or FANTASTIC!

“Is Mike WORKING HARD????”

“Do you FEEL OK????”

“You want to have the baby NOW???? Why won’t your doctor JUST INDUCE YOU???? Lexie got induced? Why DON’T YOU????

The shrill tone comes across as something that must be calmed down, but I never do a good job of calming her. Mike, in fact, says I am a smart ass. You be the judge: When she asked if Mike was working hard, I told her I didn’t know since I don’t go to work with him.

Ok, so I am a smart ass. I didn’t say it mean, though.

Also, my family really needs to understand that just because my sister had a lot more doctor’s appointments and a lot more medical intervention, doesn’t mean that I am receiving shoddy medial care. They all act like I’ve picked out a terrible doctor and none of them seem to understand that my care is different because I am not a diabetic.

Oh well. At least they care about me. Life could certainly be much worse. I just take things way too personally. It feels like they are criticizing me instead of the doctors (and I love my doctors.)

I’m way too tired to try to think of anything else to write. I would go have a glass of milk and a piece of pumpkin pie and then go off to dreamland, but the pumpkin pie is too gross to eat. I guess I’ll have to have some pineapple instead.

You gotta get a KOSHER pie shell. They don’t have lard in them, they’re made with some kind of shortening, so they don’t have that sour vile taste. They sell them in regular supermarkets but you have to look for them. The secret is to let them soften and then reroll them thinner. I like a nice thin crust myself. The pie filling takes two seconds and there is NOTHING better than pumpkin pie.

My son is a huge Thanksgiving fan, not for the holiday which is always dismal for us, but for the food. He loves turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauces, and pumpkin pie. So next week is Rosh Hashona and he asked yesterday if we were having Turkey (yes) stuffing (no) cranberry sauce (cranorange relish) and pumpkin pie (no, apple as we keep kosher). Every holiday is Thanksgiving to him. But he was thrilled to hear we’re also having matzoh ball soup and homemade gefilte fish.

    What a mom!

That kosher crust idea sounds like a good one. We’re luckier here in the UK, we get excellent ready-made pastry, shortcrust and puff, with only the ingredients I would use to make it at home anyway. Shortcrust and puff come in a block or ready-rolled quite thinly – my favourite! That makes life easier for me as I make lousy pastry if I start from scratch, holes, lumps, greasy bits, dry bits, you name it, I’m a good cook generally but for some reason pastry defeats me completely. My sister, on the other hand, makes wonderful pastry. Bah. I love her dearly but, yes, there’s still some sibling rivalry here and there!

I have a great recipe for pumpkin bars – they’re like little pumpkin pies but smaller, so you feel much less guilty about it. And they’re a lot easier than pie crust. Let me know if you want it, send me an e-mail.
Can’t wait to see your little guy!

Yes, you can use a food processor. Just make sure the shortening or butter is cold. You can also sit down and cut the stuff in – you can do quite a bit of cooking sitting down, even though you don’t always think of it at the time. I iron sitting down, when I iron, which isn’t often. Look, now I am rambling in someone else’s blog…oh brother.
