Bed Time
Mike says I have to write about sleep. Apparently the poor boy is tired. Too bad I’m wide awake. Could it be because of that hour long nap I took when I came home? I’ve never been a napper, but a room full of first graders will do it to me every time.
I do love first graders. I really do. I get hugs and sheafs of pictures declaring that I’m awesome and wonderful. “Shut up” is the worst phrase I hear. A raised eyebrow is still scary enough to work wonders.
Today was quite a day. One little girl spilled her whole brand new bottle of glue in her crayon box, dousing all her school supplies. I wanted to just throw it all out, but who knows if her parents could afford new crayons, scissors, and so forth? I gallantly rescued all her stuff by dousing it in water. Glue and water makes a huge mess. I’ve been picking “glue skin” off my hands all day.
Then there was a tornado drill. Woot! Even though I explained it several times, half the kids still thought there was a REAL tornado and were freaking out. To make matters worse, the drill was scheduled right during their transition from PE. I went down a few minutes early to see if I could help, but assumed that they would keep them until the drill was over. Oh no. Wrong wrong wrong. Instead they released the kids one minute before the drill started, so I had to herd 25 kids up three flights of stairs and through several hallways in one minute. Thankfully the drill started late or I never would have made it. Half the kids took my command to “hustle, hustle” to mean “run, run” and the other half dawdled like they were walking through a field of daisies.
See why I needed a nap?
To top it off, I bought a new brand of soy milk and it was DISGUSTING. I made my lunch shake with it and about barfed. I still may barf if I keep thinking about it. I bought an ok brand in Klamath Falls, but this stuff here was quite possibly the nastiest thing I’ve ever tasted.
I’m back to the same first grade class tomorrow so it should be interesting. Actually, I didn’t have to write a single name on the board or even threaten to take away any recess time from anyone, which is a HUGE accomplishment. They are a good class, just totally high energy.
