Baby Day

Today seems to be the day for babies. Buzz-a-roni has given birth to the beautiful Faeona Grace (isn’t that a lovely name?) and my sister has been in labor for several hours.

I am getting very antsy over here! I know inductions can take a long time, but I just want to know that everything is ok and Braxton has arrived in the big, bad world. She went in at 12:30. Mom called at 6:30 and said she was starting to have hard contractions and that everything was fine. It’s now 10:38 and we haven’t heard another peep from down there! I know it’s not easy to be running around on the phone when you are helping someone in labor (last we heard, my sister’s loser boyfriend hadn’t even showed up at the hospital so my mom is the only one there as far as we know). I just want to hear what the action is!

It was way too hot out today and I had to be out in the heat all afternoon it felt like. Of course, I am prone to exaggeration so who knows. My dad had an eye exam and it took forever. They are putting in a Coldstone Creamery right next to the vision center and it just happens that my dad’s old company is plumbing the place. That meant we had to stand around in the hot sun and listen to a bunch of fat old men telling fatter, older lies for what seemed like hours. They tried to get my dad to fix a major mistake they had just made because my dad is the best plumber in town (though he’s disabled now) but he thinks the guy who made the mistake is an asshole so wouldn’t give him any advice.

I’m in a much better, more confident mood tonight. I ran my little butt off on the elliptical machine and then did water aerobics. I LOVE exercise. Why do I sometimes want to quit? I get really cranky and depressed when I miss two days in a row. I got a big ego boost because one of the ladies who hasn’t been there in a while told me she could tell I have lost a lot of weight. That always makes life better, even if the stupid scale doesn’t understand the finer points of muscle vs. fat.

I’ve found what may be the PERFECT apartment for us. It has a whirlpool tub. That’s the major qualification. I take my bathing seriously. It has a lot of other good stuff like a washer/dryer and dishwasher so it’s not just about my soak time. I posted the addy at a LJ DC community and they all said it is about the best place you can live. Now I just hope the person advertising it gets back to me so I can say YES YES YES!

I guess that’s all. I thought I was done with my Dala quilt block until I realized that I am an even BIGGER idiot than I thought I was. I used a green piece of fabric where I was supposed to use an orange piece so my horse is backless. Poor, deformed horsey. I will redo that section tomorrow and let you all see the wonderful, wonky fruits of my labor. I picked up a couple of quilting hints that have been extremely helpful in the past couple of days.

1) Use a lint brush to pick up all the threads after picking out a seam. It really works!

2) When machine piecing, don’t watch the needle! Watch the edge of the presser foot instead. This has made an amazing difference in the straightness of my seams.

3) This was something that was really helpful and I thought “I have to post this!” and now I can’t remember. I post just this so you beginner quilters (all one of you) can cry about missing my amazing wisdom.

I never heard the word “wonky” before you used it to describe your quilts. Now I find it hilarious. I love wonky quilts. Don’t be surprised if I start using it to describe my own projects.
