This -n- That

I hate it when I dream that I’ve woken up from a bad dream, but then the alarm goes off sometime later and I have to do the whole wake up thing again, only for real. That’s happened the last two mornings, so tonight I’m going to have to program my brain not to do that. Anyone know how to program a brain? It can’t be much harder than perl can it?

Aqua jogger was nice and relaxing tonight — I was the only student! It was nice to have a reprieve from the bitches, though aqua jogger doesn’t usually have bitches. I sure do like that word a lot, don’t I?

I think I might be about to curse myself. As you may recall, I submitted a piece of my novel to a writing contest a few weeks ago. The prize in each category is a complete manuscript review by a real publisher. I don’t think I have much of a chance of winning, but just in case I do win I figured I better print out the novel, do some editing and then finish the darned thing. Of course, now that I’m prepared (or planning to be prepared) I won’t win, but if I put it from the back of my mind and was totally unprepared you know I’d win. This is an awfully early self-justification for losing, isn’t it?

School was no fun today. The weather was rainy, snowy, sleety, blowy by turns, so we ended up not taking the kids out for recess. That’s a good thing in a “I’m happy I didn’t have to stand out in the cold” sort of way, but it’s a very, very bad thing in the “my Lord these kids need to run 10 miles so they’ll stop wiggling” kind of way. I think I pissed off the librarian in my quest to solve the problem. First, let me just say in general I have the utmost respect for librarians and think they have a much harder job than people realize. The HS I worked at had a stellar librarian who saved my life on many, many occasions. I want to be a librarian. Now that the disclaimer is out of the way, the particular librarian at this school pretty much sucks. I’ve never seen her do anything but sit at her desk with a glassy eyed stare. I pop in at all different times during the day, so I don’t think it’s a matter of me catching her on her breaks each time. She just is lazy and dull.

When we have the kids inside we bring them to the library (I don’t know why we don’t take them to the gym). The librarian puts on a movie and we aids try keep 125 kids silent for 25 minutes. You may laugh now.

Today the librarian slammed in some barely animated thing from the 1940s and the kids did not like it at all. I did not like it at all. I couldn’t keep the kids quiet and didn’t think I should have to. I consulted the two other aids, then made an executive decision (because I’m good at those) to play Simon Says instead of watch the pseudo-cartoon. The kids had a blast and got wore out (we did lots of jogging in place and hopping) but the librarian kept staring at me with her stern little lips. Apparently she tattled on me to the principal, but he didn’t realize she was tattling. He thought she was praising me for my initiative and creativity. At least the principal and I are on the same page about things like this.

I just don’t understand why she was showing such a crappy movie. Hasn’t she ever heard of Disney or Shrek? I could silence a group of 9th graders by slamming Mulan into the VCR. Surely that would work even better with the little guys?

I guess that’s all I have to report tonight. I added one little thing to my QoR site tonight and will be fleshing it out eventually. I put up a book blog where I’m going to post reviews of books I read and/or talk about the current books I’m reading.
